Butternut Squash!

We've been experimenting a bit with solids for the past month, letting Ben put his hands in our food, and sucking on our finger dipped in avocado. A couple nights ago we tried in earnest. I had boiled some butternut squash for a stew for Jamie (he's recovering from surgery for a ruptured appendix), and I took four cubes of well-cooked squash and set it in front of Benjamin in his high chair.

First Ben grabbed a cube and squeezed until it squished between his fingers. His eyes opened wide with delight. He squeezed another cube. Equally satisfying results. Then he tentatively placed his fingers in his mouth. Mmmmm!! The sucking began in earnest, as Ben tried to shove both fists covered in butternut goodness into his mouth. LeeAnne, Jamie's mom, and I were doubled-over with laughter to see him going to town on the squash. We were so tickled, we wheeled Ben, squash, high chair and all, into the bedroom where Jamie was resting so that Jamie could take part in the hilarity. Ben continued to suck and slurp his fingers until he had finished off all four cubes.
